Wrap Up

Well, this has been a great learning experience. I plan to continue using Habit 7 1/2 of the 7 1/2 Habits of Hightly Successful Lifelong Learners. (Play, Play, Play). I am already using many of the things that I have learned. This stuff isn't as hard or "scary" to learn as I thought it would be. It just takes time and practice and a whole lot of patience. In the future, I intend to keep up with all the new advances in technology.

Wikis

Our library is already using Wikis. This is what we have so far.

Staff Wikis:

Reference, Research and Instructions (by invitation/ in progress)
Public Services (Public)
Circulation Students (Public)
Software Support (Public)

The Reference wiki is a great way to share information. It is also being used as a training tool for new reference Librarians.

Social Bookmarking - Delicious

I think Delicious would be a good place to keep bookmarks for information that I would use when I am working at the reference desk. I have Libquides for my subject area, but there are sites that I use that are not in Libguides. I don't have time to set up a Delicious account now, but I plan to in the future.

Social Networking

I created a Facebook account a few weeks ago. Some long-lost relatives and high school classmates were asking to be my friend so I decided to go for it. I was surprised at how quickly others were adding me. It has been great catching up with everyone.

I think it would be great for a library to have a facebook page. There could be a list of events, news, etc., and updates on what is going on at the library and people could make comments.

Office 2.0 - Google Docs

http://docs.google.com/present/view?id=dczvcrjn_1hpsws3cr&revision=_latest&start=0&theme=plainjane&cwj=true

The possibilities of Google Docs is endless. I can see many work and personal uses. I did a short slideshow of my Cruise. Putting the pictures in was very easy using the drag method. I will be doing more exploring and experimenting with Google Docs.

YouTube

I didn't have any problems with YouTube other than I needed to take my Popup Blocker off. Our library already has videos on YouTube. I have a link to two of them below. Our students and staff members had a good time putting them together.

Podcast

I looked in Podcastalley.com and found lots of library podcasts. I added "Library Lady Audiobooks" to my Blog account. This interested me because I have a child with Dyslexia and a friend who has Quadriplegia. This would be another option for them other than books-on-tape. This could also be of use to other library patrons.

Our library has already made use of Podcasts. You can check them out at: http://www.usd.edu/library/BiblioFiles/

I think flickr is awesome!! Now that I know how to use it, I can share my pictures with friends and family, and use its applications at work.

RSS Feeds

Loved the idea of being able to have all my frequently visited sites in one place. I can see where it will be great to use at work and home. It was alot easier to do than I thought it would be. I still have more "playing" that I want to do.

Twitter

I don't see myself using Twitter on a personal level. My life isn't that interesting to twitter about. I would probably only use it if it was some day used at our library for work purposes.

Blog

Setting up the blog was not too hard. The hardest part was coming up with a name and deciding which template to use. I have been using my "toolbox" to answer some of my questions.

7 1/2 Lifelong Learning Habits

The easiest for me is to create my own toolbox. I have a fellow employee who knows all this tech stuff and is always willing to help me. I also have a teenager who I can ask questions. They seem to absorb technology through osmosis.

The hardest is play. It is hard for me to find the time to play and my ancient computer at home is not working. My blog submissions will probably be short and sweet.

Test Post

Hi! I will be back later when time permits.
